My dearest D,

One of the greatest joys in my life has been watching you grow from the curious and cheeky little girl you once were, into the woman you are now – wilful, independent, sometimes headstrong, but above all, a woman with big dreams and a kind heart

When you left home for the first time to college, that was when I finally realised it: “My little girl is all grown up now.” I had to be strong and hold back tears when you cried saying goodbye, but little did you know that when your Dad and I drove back home, I was crying, too. I also never told you this, but in the beginning, I would sleep in your room whenever I missed you – never had I thought that I would be a sappy Mom, but there I was, going through your clothes and sleeping in your bed!

Everyone always talks about what’s coming next in their lives but now that I’m on the other side of the fence, I’ve learned how bittersweet it is to watch your own children grow up and spread their wings to find their own place in this world. But at the end of the day, I hope you remember that your Dad and I will always be here to welcome you home.

In the meantime, fly as far as your wings can take you, my little butterfly.

Love,

Mom
